Your Game Doesn’t Need To Be Original

3 min read

There seems to be some people in the game development community that think every one of their games needs to be completely new. They can’t make World War shooters because of Battlefield and Call of Duty. They can’t make a multiplayer sandbox game because of Minecraft and Rust. However, take note that I listed multiple games of the same genre, and there are plenty more. There are a great number of game genres out there and with it a great numbers of games in each. The truth is, no game is truly original anymore, so your game doesn’t need to be. It just needs to special and you need to execute it well.

There is a reason why there are multiple FPS shooters out there, like Battlefield, Call of Duty, CSGO, etc. They are part of a very fun and popular genre. All of them at their core are the same, and that’s okay. It is perfectly fine and most of the time smart to try to create a game part of a popular genre. My first game was an idle game and got a decent amount of plays only because of its genre. It’s the market that is deciding what games they like, and it’s the market that you should be paying attention to.

I said your game doesn’t need to be original but needs to be special. What do I mean by this? Basically, I mean that you can’t outright copy another game. You can’t make a space sandbox game with a bunch of little green dudes researching new parts and call it “Shmerbal Space Program”. Your game has to be special in some way. Maybe you make it a literal “space race” with other countries vying to get to the next planet first. Maybe you add in alien races and have diplomacy between them. Your game just needs to be different so it is worth it for players to buy it.

You also need to execute your game well. You need to make it a bug-less smooth playing game. There are many great games out there that fall behind simply because they are buggy or don’t get a high enough FPS. Even with solid gameplay, the player experience is also very important. In the games out there that are similar to your game idea, there are probably loads of bugs with it and much room for improvement. It’s okay to make a similar game because you can make the game even better. In the immortal words of Shigeru Miyamoto, “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad”. A good game that gets tossed aside because of bugs is your opportunity to make a better version of it.

When thinking of your next game idea, don’t forget that seems to similar to already popular games. With so many games out there now, every game made will have something already released. All you need to is make it your own, and make it well.
